5 Steps to Good Graphic Design

In this economy when you have to have a project performed inside the field of graphic design and style its vital that the graphic designer you pick out be flexible, fair, and a terrific communicator. Right here are 5 points a terrific graphic designer should really do.

one particular. Communicate properly- A graphic designer need to listen to his client and periodically show the client early drafts of the style project, to make certain that the client get what they have to have. Weekly, or everyday status reports, are needed to assure that the project will be performed as scheduled. Typically occasions Graphic designers lack the communication to uncover errors just before they turn into troubles, and stick to the altering tips a client can have all through the style method. When this occurs, the style or logo will be drastically diverse then what the client envisioned. As a graphic designer, I have identified that the client a lot of instances will need to have to transform the style to meet their expectations, and if there is a lack of communication all through the design and style course of action, a designer and client will develop extra operate for themselves. If a error isn't caught ahead of much more function is completed, Normally occasions you happen to be forced to scratch all operate, for the reason that the error was not caught just before heading the incorrect path.

two. Do the activity correct the initially time- Just adore all the things else in business time is revenue. A excellent graphic designer will get the activity completed ideal the initial time which means that they take the parameters of what the client desires and build the style as ideal they can to meet these requires, inside the scheduled time frame. All requirements and specifications must be clearly presented to the designer and they must fulfill those specifications with wonderful care. Communication is crucial to make certain that the project follows the specifications, and stays on activity. If the style or project isn't what the client envisioned, measures need to have to be taken to give the final item, inside affordable time frames, and a discounted, or cost-free fee for service.

three. Fee a fair value- In this economy its critical that your graphic designer fees you a fair industry cost value. Lots of graphic designers those days will try to fee a value that is also higher to generate up for the downturn. Investigation the industry and make certain the graphic designer keeps his rates fair or even is prepared to negotiate. Payment actions and quantities are a ought to in the design and style service planet. If a designer recommend all payment upfront, there is a possibility that their dedication to the project has currently fallen quick of the value for the project. For the sake of argument, this action is appreciate a Plumber asking for all the cash up front to re-pipe your constructing, and taking weeks longer than agreed upon.

That plumber is not also concerned with your project, bring about he has all the revenue he requirements, and if he holds out on the finalized project, it really is no skin of his back, simply because they currently have your income. They will finish when they really feel really like it. My suggestion is to stroll into projects, with payments created primarily based on schedules, and specific terms. Create a half payment of the complete quantity for the project, for a designers beginning fee. Schedule smaller sized fraction payments, with needed status reports, to make certain that they designer is on track, and will continue to dedicate the designer to perform on track towards the finalized project, and nonetheless striving towards the final quantity. Staying versatile with charges and payments, keeps a valued partnership among client and provider. a lot of graphic designers will continue to land steady operate, by offering an low-cost, time powerful, and preferred item.

four. Comply with the client's requirements - Several graphic designers error graphic design and style for artistic style and try to place as well a lot of their own inventive mark or spin on a project when the preferred operate is a great deal easier. Several occasions this falls below communication, but it too is vital by the designer to stick to especially, the requires of the client. Designers must stay on track with consumers requirements, and communicate specifically any inquiries the designer could possibly have with regards to the level of freedom one has towards inventive cart blanche.

five. Be passionate and have fun with the style. No function completed by a designer really should be painful. Clientele do not require to have a design and style, that is produced with restricted passion towards the style. If you happen to be designing a very simple business card for a business enterprise, with 2 colors and no special fonts or artistic styles, you may possibly come to be bored. The fun and passion comes from understanding what the client desires, and producing that a reality for them. Even if you definitely really like the artistic, and cost-free expressive design and style of graphic design and style, supply your basic inventive side a possibility to breathe. You can build the simplest of styles, amazing. You can very easily bring extra customers to your solutions, by remaining passionate about the small items. Prior to the Cuban revolution, only a couple of artists had been involved in printmaking. Right away right after the revolution, posters did not have numerous artistic worth. The "golden era" of Cuban poster art began in the mid-1960s and lasted for virtually a decade. Posters developed in the course of this period conveyed a effective message making use of straightforward pictures and very easily recognizable symbols, partly due to limitations of silk screen printing. Are We Witnessing the Death of Graphic Design?

The enormous recognition of the Web and an increasingly higher regular of digital style are which means that conventional graphic style and branding are not the leading dogs any much more. Digital style is served to the masses on a every day basis via web sites, e-mail blasts, tv and eBooks. So exactly where does this leave standard graphic style, are we witnessing the death of graphic design and style as we know it?

There is absolutely nothing very like holding a fine good quality bound book in your hand, the touch, the really feel, the paper weight, the gloss end and the vibrant colours that pantone supplies. Even with the depletion of the Rain Forests and a reduction in common demand for paper-primarily based merchandise, there will constantly be these shoppers who need those merchandise. Just as vinyl has remained in the era of digital recordings, paper will ride the storm also - that is superior news for the conventional graphic designer. No matter whether or not paper primarily based solutions will turn into a niche really than a mass industry remains to be observed.

Yet are the two schools of design and style very that a great deal diverse anyway? Certainly what we are speaking around here is evolution and progression as one location of design and style drifts into one more and we finish up with convergence and even a lot more kinds of style as a outcome.

Digital and traditional graphic style differ in colour, font and context focus. The function of a Digital Designer is one that's a lot more technical in terms of getting to comprehend the technical elements of World wide web browser technologies and scripting for accessibility so all of their audience can view their function with out exception. Yet the standard Graphic Designer should as well believe technical elements such as print techniques and font theory.

There are clearly some basic variations in between a Graphic Designer and a Digital Designer however there are too numerous parallels. Basically, each use pictures, text, and typography to produce an impact and to communicate a message to their selected audience.

Just as Graphic Designers have had to adapt to World wide web design and style, Net Designers will must adapt to future developments in mobile technologies and other new hardware devices that will challenge their present operating practise.

Numerous Graphic Designers have adopted World-wide-web design and style expertise in order to survive and win function. The method of mixing each the standard and the digital design and style expertise is now a standard one and is echoed in the market place that constantly feeds significantly of this operate by means of - Marketing and advertising. The demand now is far more for integrated campaigns exactly where offline style supports Internet design and style in a seamless way.

There is Surely extra demand now for digital design and style courses than extra regular design and style courses and this reflects the move in capabilities. New courses are appearing all the time, quite a few constructed about the application that's made use of to design and style in today's style planet, the majority of Digital Designers and Graphic Designers sit side by side applying the similar suite of application.

What is altering a great deal is the manor in which audiences respond to information and facts. The format of Web style keeps 'the message' quick as the concentrate increases on our ever-decreasing consideration span. The video game generation never have time for 700 web page novels with hand illustrated chapter headings, they are also busy scanning the vast array of information and facts which now presents itself only a handful of clicks away.

Does this mean that we will finish up with mini-books the size of postage stamps? I assume not. It does, even so, signal a new era of design and style for each graphic and digital design and style. There will nonetheless be books in 200 years time and they will nonetheless adhere to the similar design and style principles however we will be reading them on Google Books by means of a hand held device. It is unlikely that we will be reading Shakespeare from our wristwatch as it will be illegible - so if technologies is altering you can nevertheless count on the excellent old human race. We may possibly be evolving yet unless one thing drastic occurs designers will nevertheless be designing for humans in 2209.

So Graphic Designers, never hang up your Pantone Pens however, all is not lost - come back, all is forgiven!

Fourth: Economic status
Fifth: Religion

These are important factors in knowing your audience. This information will assist you in targeting the needs of your audience. When they have their needs met they view the information as valuable.

What's The Point?

Everything should have a point. If there is no point there is no point in creating the design.

When we know what the message is then everything else will fall into place. If the point is to thank the employees for their loyal service or if it is to motivate them to sign up for new training, either way the point drives the graphic design. When the point is determined then the direction is known. When the direction is known then the scenery (graphics) will fall into place.

There are different moods for different objectives. Mood drives graphics. Graphics tap into our inner self and connect the visual, with the emotional side to produce the desired action. The designer will be able to tap into his or her creative side and evoke emotion that will convey the message and drive the desired results.

Designers will need from you, the author, powerful keywords. Keywords will drive the design. These words are what gives the graphics power. Examples of keywords are:

Excitement, Innovative, Forward Thinking, Development, Growth

As you can see these are action words. When you read them you can see and even feel excitement and action happening.

Specs For The Artwork

When doing graphics there needs to be clear communication about what the specs are for the artwork. This should be determined early on in the process so the designer can know how he or she will approach the project. It could affect the time and cost involved during the project development and eventually in the final cost of printed materials.

It is essential at the onset of the project that the specifications needed for graphics and artwork are stated up-front. If there are changes to the specifications it can alter the final cost, and in some cases that can be a significant adjustment. If the project is working on a limited budget, this could cause some significant delay, if in nothing else, in mere added delays to the project. Clearly laying out the specifications from the designer pathway to the printer is of vital importance.

Here are some specifications that need to be discussed:

1. Size or design (A5) / dimensions
2. The number of pages needed
3. Spot or 4-color Printing / Black & White
4. Number of folds needed (folded business cards)

Budget

Do you have a budget for the project? Is it set and rigid or is it negotiable?

Sometimes the designers get involved in the budget aspect of the project. This is because often they know what changes will affect the greatest change in cost. If you have hired a design agency they are typically involved in the project from start to finish, in everything from graphics to budget.

Typically if you give the agency or even an experience designer the budget requirement and the draft of the desired result, they can determine how best to achieve your project with the best use of resources. They will know where there needs to be restraints to hold the project within budget. This can also be beneficial for them to insure proper timeframes for completion to insure project completion on time and on budget.

Typically designers are given a project scope and then they provide a quote. This allows you to shop around for other quotes to see if you can locate another bid that will complete the project for less. This approach allows you to determine if you have a Cadillac idea with a Chevy budget. You can discuss with each the ways to either pair down or beef up your design costs.

It is advisable to get a few design quotes for a project before the final budget is approved. This will significantly reduce the gap between what you want and what you have as a budget.

Deadlines

If your project has a drop-dead deadline this needs to be conveyed as early as possible in the planning stage. This will give the designer or agency a specific timeframe for completion. This will assist them in knowing if they can even take on your project. They may have other projects that would conflict with yours in the realm of manpower etc. They need this information at the initial meeting.

When the deadline is discussed the timeline needs to be discussed. There is the completion date and there needs to be a printing date discussed allowing enough time for the printing to be completed before the final deadline. Provide the designer with all these dates. They will then be able to manage the project effectively. There are typically draft reviews that give you the progress and the input to make changes along the way.

There must be a set deadline. If there is no deadline the designer will be working on a nebulous deadline, which is essentially, no deadline and no direction. Remember, no direction is a map to disaster. There needs to be an agreement by both you and the designer for timescales, even before the project is started.

Your Input

This is your project so you should give your input. Your ideas are important. Remember the designer is there to take your ideas and put then into a real form. If you wish to give your design ideas, that is acceptable. The designer will steer you in the right direction if it is off in any way. Your input might be the very thought that takes this project exactly where you wanted it.

Remember, this is your project and your business. You understand more about not only your business but also the industry that you are involved in, than the designer. They are excellent at what they do; however, they are not looking at this project from your head. You have ideas that he has not seen or considered. Share them.

Also, the designer may create a design that is not the image you want for your business. It may not be wrong, maybe just not your 'taste'. That is OK. This is YOUR project, not really his. If you have some ideas for specific designs, let the designer know. He is doing the work but you will own it. If you do not give your input you are wasting both time and money because this will be the designers project and not yours. So, speak up and give your input.

Some of the design cues that are need are:

1. Colour
2. Typefaces
3. Artwork or designs
4. Websites
5. Specific Elements of Websites

Company Branding

It is important to communicate with the designer your company branding limitations and needs. The company branding is important to discuss so your graphics can remain consistent and not infringe on any one else.

The company brand, which generally is a logo and a specific colour or colours of either the logo and or text associated with the logo. If your organization has a corporate identity booklet or ebook, this should be shared with your designer.

The design process has many steps and stages. It is imperative that communication be open and ideas given freely during each stage. With open communication and careful planning the graphic design process for your next project can be a smooth and successful.

Graphic Design Ideas - How to Understand Multi-Media Design

Multimedia design is a catchall phrase to describe the growing combination of websites, film, and video in the world of graphic design. Multimedia design requires many different talents and skills. It is rare to find a graphic designer who is entirely responsible for a multimedia rich design. Multimedia often requires many different designers. Multimedia design is both complex and fundamental.

An interesting forms of multimedia design is the CD ROM. To work in multimedia design, the graphic designer must understand the basic technology behind it. For instance, the CD ROM interface requires knowledge of computers. A multimedia designer often has to work directly with the technology to achieve the right results. A multimedia designer should be fluent in programming and computer code. If you want to become a proficient graphic designer in the field of multimedia design, you should take programming courses to learn about the different levels of multimedia activity.

With so many CD ROMs and websites available, a multimedia designer can find plenty of work. Almost all major mass media corporations have their own website divisions. Just think of all the magazines, newspapers, book publishers, and television stations that have their own Web sites. It is becoming a growing trend for websites to feature original material that is not available in traditional print media. This has opened a whole new world for multimedia designers.

Just like traditional print media, multimedia design allows you to exercise your own style. Some websites are heavily informational, with streaming media clips, photos, bulletin boards, and much more. As a multimedia designer, you will be constantly challenged to develop interfaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

To work as a multimedia designer, you will need to learn how to work in a strongly collaborative environment. Almost all graphic designers work collaboratively, and this is especially true in the world of multimedia design. When you work on a website or a CD-ROM design, you will find these endeavors require intense collaboration. It is very rare to see just one designer in the role of architect and builder. Moreover, he or she should know that CD-ROM and web design is often produced under a fast-track schedule. Most websites must be launched quickly. They're often revised and updated, and rarely will the multimedia designer have the luxury of extra time to get the job done.

Working within the hierarchies of Web and CD-ROM design can be different from working in a traditional print environment. This will depend on your job assignment and the makeup of the company. As a multimedia designer, you have the opportunity to work with many different design firms. Freelancers are often hired to fill out the production teams when they receive a large project. If you are trained in the tools of the trade, you will never be out of steady work as a multimedia designer. You will have the best chance of getting hired as a multimedia designer if you have specialized training in web site design. Just a few years ago, it used to be enough to know web site design, but with today's competitive market, it is important that you get as much practical, hands-on experience in web design and multimedia design before you hit the job market.

Graphic Design Tutor: Printing Vector Files and Bitmaps

Your logo printed and displayed for the public is a reflection of your company, and is often where potential customers make their first judgment of your company. It is therefore crucial to the success of your company that your logo is always printed at its very best.

There are a few things you can do to make sure your logo is always being printed at its best. The most important thing you can do for your logo is have it created as a vector rather then a bitmap. If need be, hire a professional graphic designer to do this for you. It will save a lot of headaches in your future to have the logo created properly from the get-go. Once your logo is created make sure you receive a copy of your logo in vector format. You may not be able to open the file if you don't have the proper program, but this is the format all print companies will ask for. Make sure you get it.

When your logo is being designed, remember to keep it simple. Logos containing multiple colors, effects, gradients, etc are more expensive to reproduce in print format and often do not reproduce well. A logo should be simple in its original construction and be adaptable to each new print situation as necessary.

A vector logo will be created in a program such as Adobe Illustrator and will allow you endless freedom and creativity, as well as accuracy, when reproducing your logo in print and on the web. Any color can easily be changed for another. Elements can be moved around and manipulated, or removed completely if the situation calls for it. There is no limitation for sizing your logo either, as there would be when printing from a bitmap.

Go through the process of selecting color from the PMS color system. This system was created to allow for color matching in all areas of logo reproduction. Color is an important element of an effective logo and it is important to be consistent with your color branding. By providing your print company with PMS values you are ensuring your logo's colors will be printed properly. Even if the logo is being printed in CMYK the printer can still match the CMYK print to the PMS values you originally supplied. If you don't supply your logo with PMS values for matching you are making them guess what color is correct. Your logo and your branding are too important to be left up to guesswork.

While a logo created in Photoshop may look cool, it has limitations. Leave the PhotoShop versions of your logo for a specific time and usage and use your vector logo as much as possible. This will ensure your logo is always printed at its absolute best.

Selling a Creative Graphic Design Should Be Easy

Selling a creative graphic design should be easy with the number of editing tools and latest software that have been introduced. The scope of work for the graphic design industry is varied. It ranges from making posters to brochures, T-shirt designs to business logos, book covers to movie posters, banners and small business cards, tickets and websites, magazine covers, animated movies, web interfaces and simple fliers. The spectrum of imagination has switched from 2D to 3D. The internet has become an excellent platform for this niche sector to showcase its services. Several professionals work independently or with well known studios to express their talent with the latest software tools. They fully understand that websites have become the lifeline of several traditional business groups. A graphic design is required for creating a catchy and pleasant logo. Many companies prefer using attractive 3D logos that are sharp and good looking. This gives ample scope for editors to take up the challenge of designing them for websites. They can prepare templates, design online marketing strategies, and make e-mails and viral brochures. It also reduces the cost for the clients who prefer using the new age online marketing tools. It has become an excellent supplement to the changing print media campaigns too. Most sellers now recognize the need for attractive proposals in the form of multi-media presentations that can be sent on the e-mail. This has also increased the capacity of using the online medium effectively.

A good way to ensure that a graphic design is accepted is to make sure it is simple and yet stands out in its ability to communicate with the potential buyers. A realistic approach will include these six points:

1. Producing cost effective designs.
2. Understanding the needs of the client before making the artwork.
3. Presenting trials or samples to gain confidence of the potential buyer.
4. Quoting realistic prices to avoid bargaining.
5. Having strict delivery schedules to ensure the buyer returns with more orders.
6. Be abreast with the latest software and tools to remain afloat in the competitive market.

A digital marketing concept is incomplete without a great graphic design. The same is also true for e-magazines, web based business that rely on online shopping carts. What is the point if client visits the website and is unimpressed? The graphics or the look of the website should be appealing to the user who wants to buy the products or services. A great website design should be user friendly. An overtly complicated website may be great thing to look at. But in reality is like a menu card that promises a great dinner ahead. But, guests have to spend tough time actually figuring out the menu. By then they lose half of their appetite. Irrespective of the size of the web based application, the target audience or buyers, the graphic design lays the foundation.

Quality is the last word that typifies a good creative from a bad one. This highly competitive world of sector has talented professionals. They come up with amazing solutions at reasonable prices. A number of graphic design companies operate online. The projects can be easily outsourced to them.

Graphic Design Tips For Beginners

Every beginning is hard - even for graphic design. After all, it's not enough that you are creative. You must also have excellent marketing skills and a great eye for detail.

Just so you can wade through the first steps with more confidence, you can use the following tips below:

Know your message.

Some experts would say that you should get an inspiration first. However, it's easier for you to get your subject if you know the type of message you are trying to send across. For example, if you want to tell the world about world peace, you can conveniently pick up images of soldiers and perhaps war victims that you took yourself or you got from free-share galleries. You can then combine the images with a powerful text, tweak them according to your liking and creative expression, and you're already done.

Don't overcrowd a page.

Again, this boils down to have a very specific purpose in your mind. After all, when you know what you want to tell, you can also determine the best possible images, sketches, or texts that would do just that. You won't be tempted to overwhelm your work with a lot of them. This may only send the wrong message to your audience, not to mention that it reduces the value of what you did.

Make your text stand out.

One of the common mistakes graphic design beginners make is to focus too much on the picture that they are no longer paying attention to the text. It's very important that your texts would also be visible and readable by your audience. This means that the background should never be of the same shade of your text. Of course, it's important that you check how the texts would look like before you eventually consider printing or publishing your design.

Correct spelling and grammar.

Do you know that it's a big turn-off for readers to spot wrong grammar and spelling in ads? You really don't want to be a laughing stock by many. Take time to read and re-read what you have just written in your design. If you're wordy, you can reduce the number of words to make the text more compact or precise. In graphic design, less will always be more.

See how others are doing it.

There are plenty of graphic designers all over the world. Some of them are new like you while others have already garnered a considerable number of years for experience. You can learn from both of them.

These new graphic designers usually have fresher and bolder ideas, so you can always add something innovative into your design. Old ones can give you great tips on how to make it last longer in graphic design. Some of their techniques are classic or timeless. This means that you can modify them, but the principles should still remain as they are always effective.

It's going to be a difficult journey in graphic design, but it's actually the challenges that make it more exciting. Just learn to follow the tips above, and you'll do just fine.

Finding Real Deal Graphic Design Services

These days there are a lot of Graphic Designers offering services online. Perhaps too many. This article covers some useful need-to-knows about Graphic Designers and what to look for when ordering a logo design, brochure design or any of the countless reasons to order a graphic design service for your company or organization's imaging needs.

Graphic design services these days (like any services these days) have been on a downward slide for some time now (in this Designer's opinion). Take logos for example. I can't tell you how many logos I see out there featuring a swoosh or swipe looking graphic that shoots out as though orbiting the text that makes up the logo. I would like to tell you that the Designers who created the thousands of swoosh logos out there, utilized this staple of design because it was the best solution for their client. I can just hear them stating how this simple element is really a complex and developed "less is more" approach to their client's design and worth every drop of the hundreds of dollars they are charging for it. I would like to tell you that but unfortunately that is just not the case.

I'm not saying that if you have a swoosh in your logo then you got scammed by a false Graphic Designer looking to make a quick buck on a simple design that catches your eye. In fact I have even used a swoosh or two in my designs (though usually at my client's request and certainly not as the only element in the design). What I am saying is that when you look at how many logos out there feature this graphic swoosh element it becomes quite obvious that a great deal of graphic design sources these days are just trying to get their orders filled as quickly as possible without actually putting thought into the purpose of the design and the needs of the client. It is sad but true that most companies of any kind in this day and age are focusing more on looking like a company rather than actually being a company. How many times have you ordered something only to find out later it was just a gimmick designed to get the sale.

So how do you know if you are hiring a real Graphic Designer focused on doing real design work and not just one of the many impostors out there trying to look like they are putting the time and thought into your design that you are paying them good money for? A good place to start is the facts.

When you are online looking for a Graphic Designer, do a little reading. They should have an About Page, a resume or some form of credentials available on their website. If they don't then its time to leave that website. I do not recommend testimonials because these days there is no way to verify where these wonderful comments came from. Stick to the facts and information that can be verified if need be. If you are paying hundreds of dollars or more for design services then you had better see some years of experience on that Designer's resume. Where did they get their education and did they actually even major in Graphic Design? What does their job history look like. Have they really been a Graphic Designer at every job in their resume? It is worth it to do a little research because chances are you are going to need more design work done in the future and wouldn't it be great to have a Designer you can depend on?

Next take a good look at their design portfolio. Do the designs look similar to each other? Maybe the elements of the designs look different (because they are for different companies) but are they all arranged about the same with the same kind of type used? Are they just putting swooshes on everything? If so then you are most likely at the site of one of the impostors who uses visual gimmicks to wow their clients and get the sale.

Beware those graphic design websites offering promises that are too good to be true (if something sounds too good to be true... ). If you are paying only $50 for a logo then your are most likely getting a pre-made graphic or clip art with your company name stamped on it to make the sale. If they say that countless designers will be working on your project then chances are you will never speak directly with those designers, or you will be paying for countless designers, or they are just using visual gimmicks to get the design sold so they can move on to the next client as quickly as possible.

You don't have to take my word for it. Feel free to try these graphic design gimmick sites yourself. But don't say I didn't warn you if you find yourself with designs that are not working as you expected or Graphic Designers charging you for even a simple adjustment to your design. Gimmicks are used all over the world these days so don't be surprised if the design that you though really popped, ends up blending in like one of those swoosh logo in a sea of thousands of swoosh logos!

Graphic Design Futures

Graphic design is a profession offering a variety of rewarding opportunities in just about every industry. An array of companies and organizations need skilled graphic designers for their advertising and marketing departments. This is a fast-paced, creative career that places the graphic designer either in the midst of a marketing team, or alone in more creative confines. Indeed, many graphic designers are self-employed and enjoy the freedom of working from home or telecommuting.

Respected institutions will teach you how to use color, select type, work with artistic images, manage the design process, collaborate with clients and take advantage of the powerful capabilities of three of today's most popular graphic software applications - Adobe® Photoshop®, Adobe® Illustrator® and InDesign®. Graphic designers work to produce the artwork for promotional displays, packaging, ads, direct mail, marketing brochures and signs for products and services. They may also be charged with supervising the production of magazines, newspapers, newsletters and other publications.

The demand for graphic designers is projected to increase as the demand for Web-based information and design likewise increases. Graduates with hands-on digital design software experience are expected to be in particular demand. Advertising firms, publishing companies and computer design firms are key employers of graphic designers. Creativity, communication, and problem solving skills are all essential traits for the successful graphic designer.

A bachelor's degree is required for most entry-level and advanced graphic design positions; although some entry-level technical positions may only require an associate degree. Most curriculum include such classes as studio art, principles of design, computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques, and website design. Additionally, a worthy liberal arts education should include courses in art history, writing, psychology, sociology, at least one foreign language, as well as classes in cultural studies, marketing, and business. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits about 250 postsecondary institutions with programs in art and design. Many academies will not allow students to begin their bachelor's program until he or she has successfully finished a year of basic art and design courses.

More and more, employers expect graphic designers to be familiar with computer graphics and design software. Because market tastes change quickly, designers must be well read, open to new ideas and influences, and quick to react to new trends. Students in this field need self-discipline to start projects, budget their time, and meet deadlines and production schedules.

New graphic designers often receive on-the-job training and typically need between 1 to 3 years of training before they can advance to higher positions. Professional graphic designers tend to advance to chief designer, art or creative director, or other supervisory positions.

Graphic Design Tools

Graphic Design is the combination of art and science to convey a message through visuals. It is accepted as a mode of communication. Now that the world has entered the internet age and most businesses compete for the attention of consumers through cyberspace, graphic design artists have become a necessity. Designers are needed to make appealing web pages. No matter how useful or moving the contents of a website are, it might still not meet the desired results of the owner if it does not look good. Appearance is the primary attribute people notice. When one is surfing online he would most likely check only web pages that in first glance seem to be host important information.

Tools
1. Human Mind
This is the most important tool in Graphic Design especially since graphic design is half art. While the science half can be left to technology the art half cannot. Human judgment, taste, and preference and of course creativity are vital elements of a successful graphic design piece. Another important attribute machines or technology cannot provide is originality. Designers are hired to make original works. Their works can be totally original starting with each little piece. Their works may also compose of non-original pieces arranged and put together in such a unique way that the origin of the pieces becomes immaterial. Many designers have also developed their own techniques and style of designing.

2. Computer
The computer is an essential tool in Graphic Design because it is what is used to run the different software and applications the designer needs to adequately perform his tasks. Computers can perform many things exponentially faster than humans. They can store data and information in a way that they can be easily retrieved. They are also the primary means in which an individual can connect to the internet. Cyberspace is an important resource because it houses countless images, characters, layouts, and all other graphic design elements most of which can be downloaded for free. Though there are still some who conduct traditional methods of graphic design, a vast majority prefers using computers to make the work easier, faster, and more convenient.

3. Software and Applications
These are a collection of codes and programs that work together to assist the computer user in performing a particular set of tasks. Graphic Design software and applications have greatly evolved through the years. Tasks that used to take days of sitting and working in front of the computer can now be completed in minutes using the right application. Most applications focus on one area such as the Photoshop which revolves around quick, easy, and convenient manipulation and alteration of images. Graphic design tools of today are so efficient even kids can now create their own designs. Some successful designers have not even undergone design classes and simply learned from using applications.

4. Pencil
The pencil is one of the basic tools in graphics. Today however, it is not only limited to the traditional handheld pencil. It can come in the form of a laser pen or a digital pen.

Keep Your Marketing Mobile - Promote Your Business With Vehicle Graphic Design

Marketing in today's society means much more than it used to. Not too long ago, all it took was a well-placed newspaper ad, a catchy jingle on the radio, and good old fashion word of mouth. Today we have the internet, social media, television, radio, magazines, newspapers, billboards, and the list goes on and on! So the real question is, how do you differentiate your business from everyone else and continue to be seen on a daily basis? Your car! Your car has the power to be noticed by hundreds of cars every single day in your neighborhood, town, and city, so why not use vinyl lettering and vehicle graphic design to display your logo on your vehicle? There are a few ways promoting your company while using your vehicle is helpful to your business, so let's check out if it's the right solution for you.

Localized Clientele - Living and working in the same town gives you a major advantage in capturing the right audience. Any time you need to drive anywhere, the entire local community sees your car with beautifully designed vinyl lettering promoting your company. Adding a telephone number, email address and most importantly website, helps the consumer find your business right away. Encourage the use of social media apps right there on your car so your audience can like you on Facebook, Instagram your famous car, or check your business reviews online.

New Consumers Daily - With billboards and ad print, your advertising is stationary and appeals to the specific consumer who either drives past the same billboard every day or reads the same newspaper or magazine every week. The vinyl logo on your car moves wherever you do! Whether you're at the doctor's office, visiting a client, grabbing dinner, or picking up groceries, new consumers are seeing your brand daily, which broadens your target audience.

Stand Out in a Crowd - Have you ever tried finding your car in a parking lot on black Friday? It's impossible! Not only because there are a magnitude of fellow shoppers out there fighting for a deal, but because most people have the same car and in the same color. Adding logos, decals, and graphic designs to your car gives it the "Peacock" effect. Your car will stand out among the thousands of other similar cars on the road and forces heads to turn. On average, most consumers will spend the extra few seconds to read what you have to offer or look out for your car while driving around town! Plus, you will always find your car during the holiday sales.

Target Audience - If your business has a specific audience you would like to tailor too, all you have to do is scope out where your audience is, and make sure you and your car are there! For example, if you own a pet grooming service, drive to the dog parks, animal shelters, attend humane society events, and patron dog friendly businesses. People will immediately be intrigued by the vehicle graphic design and want to talk more about your services. The car acts as a great introductory talking point, which may then continue the introduction with business cards and social interaction.

It is increasingly important to stay apart of the ever growing advertising industry by having your own website, email, social media pages, and blogs, but it's even more important to stand out from the rest. Keep yourself one above the competition and do something bold your consumers will appreciate by using vehicle graphic design.

Atanu Das specializes in marketing, branding, and communication, which has brought to light new ways to reach audiences through gorilla marketing. He has worked with clients who have used vehicle graphic designs for artistic logos and vinyl lettering for direct contact information. The clients have seen an increase in their business.

Teaching Graphic Design in a Digital Age

It is necessary to focus on how the teaching of graphic design is governed and managed in Jordan. It is known that this is a relatively new practice to Jordan and the Arab world, especially the skills of graphic design teaching, it is not like the other branches of art. It has no strengthened roots or identity, as part of the Arab culture.

This discipline had a strong relationship with printing, whilst to a certain extent this still holds true, it is now taking to be an integral parts of the design process. With the introduction of technology in the teaching of this specialization, students and teachers should be encouraged to search into their creative mind.

Teaching must create an environment that nurtures and encourages innovative thinking, visual literacy, students centered-learning and personal development. Students must be able to recognize true creativity because just knowing how to use a particular tool or a software program does not make one a designer. Art institutions should be aware of the ever-changing nature of the technology they teach with. This constant attempt to keep up to date from part of the strategic planning of the institution, however a focus on the traditional design teaching methods, principles and process should not be forgotten.

The development of Digital Art and Design education provides new production methods such as computer rendering and modeling. This increases our ability to create, to see and to express and compose a layout. We are interested in how Digital Art and Design education and physical materials can be used interchangeably as instruments in the teaching of this subject.

The development of digital methods does not deter from the importance of traditional methods of teaching; however, this should be used in conjunction with the digital approach to the study of materials and mediums. The traditional approach in particular focuses on colour, light, texture, form, shape and composition. Through the teaching of traditional methods in design we are able to challenge students to be more questioning about their use of new technologies. By encouraging students to interact with the medium as part of the creative process, it not only redefines established solutions, but also encourages development of the student's imagination. By aiding students to develop real methodology that explores the concerns and techniques of making and exploring objects is essential to the future of graphic design.

Schools and institutions have supplied generations of young graduates into the graphic industry. In the past, art education and more specifically graphic design courses created a forum in which the 'craft' was learnt. Here students were encouraged to challenge previously unchallenged ideas, whilst at the same time developing the skills they would need in the future. Graduates then finished their formal education with an apprenticeship in a design company. Young graduates would then develop specific disciplines such as typographic expert, magazines, creative and art direction. By undertaking an apprenticeship students were exposed to the commercial pressures of the industry something which a classroom can only try to simulate, this putting them in good stead for their future careers.

All the aforementioned disciplines had a distinct relationship with the craft of printing and as such more defined roles existed for the graduate. It is these established routes which distinguished graphic design as a 'craft' and aided the transition of the skills from education into industry.

In Jordan, most of the colleges and institutions do still teach as part of their study plan:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Colour theories: using practical application and mainly traditional teach methods. (Colour circles, 2D & 3D shapes and forms. Students also learn about space, background and texture.)
  • Poster illustration: By actively starting and completing a design using Poster Colours or Gouache.
  • Introduction to Typography and Arabic Calligraphy
  • Materials and Textures (medias & Mediums): i.e. colour pencils, airbrush, Gouache, poster colour
  • Graphic Art: Printing and Engraving techniques

The changes that have taken place in the industry and weakened these established routes have coincided with a large influx of graphic design graduates leaving art institutions. Many new technologies now have their place on the curriculum. During the first year of a four-year course, the students are expected to acquire a large number of core skills. These range from traditional print to an understanding of the new media. The demand put upon students to be multidisciplinary against a background of gradual overlapping of the roles of the technician, the programmer and the designer means that less time is spent developing their individual creativity. Students today often assume that the solutions to visual problems can be solved using the technology available to them, rather than through their own knowledge and skill. It has become the responsibility of the discipline tutors to encourage students to find creative skills based solutions to visual problems and to further facilitate the student's personal exploration of creativity through the process of creative thinking.

In Jordan we recognized that technology has significantly changed how students and tutors value core design principles. In teaching graphics today the computer has almost replaced the basic tools of the trade. New technology does provide simultaneous control over different components of design however, it is important to remember that computers are not designers. The biggest error made today in this profession is to use any given template on software package to complete a work. In reality a template is only a guide and it should only be used as an aid to reach the final layout, in other words, a template is a tool for sculpting the masterpiece.

Reflecting upon this we must create study plans that push students, in the early part of their degree, to explore their skills. When planning our study plans it should be remembered that many of the students who join Art and Design courses do not have strong backgrounds in the discipline.

We aim to do this because we believe that when teaching Art and Design students must be encouraged to search within themselves, within their creative minds to provide the answers and not just rely on a computer to produce the layout for them. Similarly students should learn when and how to use the appropriate software. Students should be taught visual literacy and must be able to recognize true creativity as opposed to the craze. By simply understanding how to use a given piece of software to create a layout does not make one a designer.

I have respect for technology and welcome the advances it makes in the field. There is a place for graphic design that is influenced by technology. However, I believe that fostering creativity, the design process and its principles is paramount.

The teaching of traditional tools and principles should be the driving forces in future study plans, as I personally believe that anybody who has access to a software package can call himself or herself a designer. However, I believe this is an abuse of principles and practices. Mastering software tools does not truly constitute a 'designer' in the traditional sense of the word. Software can replace the tools and make the process easier but it will never replace the creative mind and the trained hand.
